Getting from Phuket to Phi Phi
The journey itself is half the thrill. Most visitors take a speedboat (45โ60 mins) or ferry (1.5โ2 hours) from Rassada Pier in Phuket. Speedboats are faster and more flexible, while ferries are cheaper and more relaxed. Tours usually include hotel pickup and lunch, making logistics smooth.
Tip: Book morning departures for calmer seas and quieter lagoons. Avoid last-minute bookings in high season (DecโMar).
Should You Do a Day Trip or Stay Overnight?
Day trips are ideal if youโre short on time or want to hit the highlights โ think Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, and some quick snorkeling. Itโs fast-paced, but youโll see a lot.
Staying overnight (on Phi Phi Don) lets you enjoy the island after the tour boats leave. The beaches empty out, the vibe slows down, and sunrise at Maya Bay becomes a real possibility.
Tip: If youโre into peace, avoid staying in the party zone near Tonsai Pier. Look for bungalows or hillside stays just 10โ15 minutes out.
Whatโs Actually on the Phi Phi Islands?
There are six islands total, but the two youโll hear most about are:
- Phi Phi Don: The main island where accommodations and shops are
- Phi Phi Leh: Uninhabited, home to Maya Bay and those jaw-dropping cliffs
Boats usually cruise around Pileh Lagoon, stop to snorkel, and dock briefly at Maya Bay (note: swimming inside Maya is currently not allowed to protect coral life).
Tip: Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag. Phones love to drown out there.
What to Pack for a Phi Phi Trip
- Swimwear and dry clothes
- Dry bag and waterproof phone case
- Reef-safe sunscreen + bug spray
- Cash (limited ATM access)
- Motion sickness meds if needed
My Personal Recommendation
If time allows, I always recommend spending at least one night. The crowds disappear, the stars come out, and the quiet gives you space to breathe. Itโs not just a day trip โ itโs a pause button for the soul.
