Right by the Ruins
A few small hotels sit close to the archaeological site. You’d wake up to those columns practically outside your
window, which sounds pretty incredible.
- The Upside: You’re right there. Early morning light on those stones, fewer crowds if you head out at dawn, and you can duck back to your room when the midday heat gets brutal.
- The Downside: Limited options, and they tend to run higher in price. It’s a small area, so don’t expect a ton of variety for dinner.
Just Outside Town
Head a bit away from the center and you’ll find guesthouses and budget spots that won’t destroy your wallet. The vibe is quieter, more residential.
Logistics: You’ll need a taxi to get to the ruins (cheap and easy to arrange), but you save money and escape the tourist bubble a bit.
Something Different: Ajloun Forest Reserve
About 30 minutes from Jerash, the Ajloun Forest Reserve has these RSCN cabins tucked into the hills. I didn’t stay there, but the idea stuck with me β waking up in the trees, hiking before breakfast, then heading to Jerash afterward.
It’s rustic, definitely more about nature than luxury. And yes, you’re further from the ruins. But if you want to mix history with the outdoors, it’s worth considering.
Homestay in Orjan Village
Some travelers stay with local families in nearby Orjan. I didn’t do this either, but the appeal is real β home-cooked meals, actual conversation, a glimpse into daily life beyond the tourist sites.
It requires flexibility and an open mind. Language might be a barrier. But if cultural immersion matters to you, this could be the move.
My Take
If this is your first time and you want simplicity, stay in Amman and visit Jerash for the day. It’s what most people do, and honestly, it works.
But if you’ve got time and want to linger? Pick what speaks to you.
- History lovers might want those ruins at their doorstep.
- Nature people might choose Ajloun.
- Culture seekers might go for the homestay.
Just know that Jerash itself isn’t a big accommodation hub, so keep expectations realistic.
