The desert floor at Wadi Rum is rust-red and completely flat in places, then suddenly interrupted by sandstone mountains that rise up to 700 meters with no warning. I got there at dusk on a shared jeep tour and the color shift in the last hour of light, from orange to deep red to something close to purple, is the thing I keep coming back to when I think about Jordan. Most people visit on a one or two night camping stay, and that’s the right way to do it. A day trip from Aqaba or Petra is possible but you lose the night sky, which is half the reason to come.

Everything Worth Knowing About Wadi Rum
Honest guides to where to stay, what to do, and what to skip.
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months. Summer days regularly hit 40ยฐC in the open desert, and winter nights drop close to freezing, so layering matters more than most people expect.
Yes, Wadi Rum is safe and the Bedouin guides who operate there are experienced and well regarded. The main practical issue is that mobile signal is unreliable inside the protected area, so download offline maps and confirm all arrangements before you enter.
The Wadi Rum Visitor Centre is about 60km northeast of Aqaba and 120km from Petra. JETT tourist buses connect Aqaba to the visitor centre for around JD 10-15, and most camps offer pickup from the visitor centre or the Wadi Rum junction.
The entrance fee to the protected area is JD 5 per person, but this is covered by the Jordan Pass if you have one. Jeep tours run JD 25โ40 per person for a two to three hour circuit depending on the route and group size.
Most camps offer either standard Bedouin tents or bubble tents for stargazing, which run JD 80โ150 per person including meals. Basic camp stays with shared facilities start around JD 35โ45 per person and are perfectly comfortable for the experience.
One night is the minimum worth doing. Two nights lets you catch sunrise and sunset without rushing and gives you time for a longer jeep route that reaches the quieter southern sections of the desert.
Most standard tours cover Lawrence's Spring, Khazali Canyon, the red sand dunes, and rock bridges over two to three hours. Longer full-day tours go deeper into the protected area and include lunch cooked in the desert.
